ELDM launches new projects in Peru

Dr. Plowden and Dr. Schuhmann in the Peruvian Amazon - July 2008

The Amazon epitomizes the greatest global challenge we face today: balancing human development and protection of the environment. The Amazon region contains most of the planet’s remaining rainforests; it is unsurpassed in density and diversity of species and is a critical sink for atmospheric CO2. The Amazon is also home to real humans with real needs and aspirations.

Partnering with Dr. Campbell Plowden, President of the Center for Amazon Community Ecology (CACE, www.amazonecology.org), the Engineering Leadership Development Program is launching new projects in Peru, working with CACE to help locals develop the sustainable harvest and marketing of non-timber forest products such as fruits, fibers, resins, and oils.
